Missing or Delayed Payment? The 3-Day Rule
The Social Security Administration officially instructs beneficiaries to wait three business days after their scheduled payment date before calling to report a missing deposit.
Many financial institutions process incoming government automated clearing house (ACH) transfers at different times throughout the business day.
How to Sign Up for Direct Deposit
Federal law requires all federal benefit payments to be delivered electronically. You have two main ways to receive your money safely:
1. Direct Deposit into Your Bank Account
Deposited automatically into your personal checking or savings account at any bank or credit union.
- ✓ Fastest access to funds
- ✓ No check-cashing fees
- ✓ Insured by FDIC or NCUA
2. Direct Express® Debit MasterCard®
For beneficiaries without a bank account. Payments are automatically loaded onto a secure prepaid debit card.
- ✓ No bank account or credit check required
- ✓ Use anywhere Debit Mastercard is accepted
- ✓ Call 1-800-333-1795 to enroll
3 Steps to Take If Your Payment Does Not Arrive
- Step 1: Check your banking app or call your bank: Ask if there is a pending ACH deposit from the U.S. Treasury. Financial institutions sometimes hold deposits for verification or process them late in the afternoon.
- Step 2: Verify your scheduled date: Make sure the date wasn't moved due to a federal holiday or weekend using our Payment Date Calculator.
- Step 3: Contact the SSA if 3 business days have passed: Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM Monday–Friday, or visit your local Social Security field office.
