When Do We Get Our Social Security Checks?

Most Social Security retirement, SSDI, and survivor payments arrive on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on the worker's birthday. Some people are paid on the 3rd, and SSI arrives on the 1st. When a date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment comes the business day before. Find your next date below.

When Will I Receive My Social Security Check This Month?

If you started benefits after April 1997, your payment day is set by the birthday of the worker whose record you're paid on. Here are the October dates:

Birthday on the 1st–10th

Second Wednesday

Wednesday, October 14, 2026

Birthday on the 11th–20th

Third Wednesday

Wednesday, October 21, 2026

Birthday on the 21st–31st

Fourth Wednesday

Wednesday, October 28, 2026

Example: a retiree born on March 18 is in the 11th–20th group, so she is paid on the third Wednesday — Wednesday, October 21, 2026 this month. Her husband, who gets spouse benefits on her record, is paid the same day even though his birthday is in July.

Will I Get My Social Security Check on the 3rd?

Only if one of these applies to you or anyone paid on the same work record:

  • You (or anyone on the same work record) filed for benefits before May 1, 1997.
  • You also receive SSI, or your income counts toward someone else's SSI.
  • You live outside the United States.
  • Your state pays your Medicare Part B premium.

Everyone else follows the Wednesday schedule. This month, the 3rd-of-month payment is Friday, October 02, 2026, moved earlier because the usual date falls on a Saturday.

How the 3rd-of-month and dual SSI schedule works

When Does SSI Come?

SSI is paid on the 1st of the month, regardless of birthday. When the 1st is a weekend or holiday, it arrives the business day before — sometimes at the end of the previous month. That's why some months show two SSI deposits and the next month shows none. It isn't extra money.

Next SSI payment: Friday, October 30, 2026 (the November payment).

Will Social Security Checks Come Early This Month?

A payment comes early only when its date falls on a weekend or federal holiday — SSA then pays on the business day before. Payments never come late for that reason.

  • Social Security (3rd of month): Friday, October 02, 2026 instead of October 3, because the usual date falls on a Saturday.

Will I Get My Social Security Check Tomorrow?

No Social Security or SSI payments are scheduled tomorrow (Saturday, October 03, 2026).

To check for yourself: know your benefit type, then the worker's birthday, then look up this month's date for that group, allowing for weekends and holidays. The checker at the top does all four steps.

Social Security Direct Deposit Dates

Direct deposit follows the same schedule: the payment date is the day funds are available. SSA doesn't set an hour — many banks post overnight, others during the morning, and some release Treasury deposits a day or two early as a courtesy.

Paper checks are being phased out. Since September 30, 2025, federal benefits have moved to electronic payment, and SSA plans to finish the switch in 2026. If you don't have a bank account, the Direct Express prepaid card receives payments on the same dates.

How direct deposit timing works

Haven't Received Your Payment? What to Do

  1. Confirm your group and date in the checker above — spouses and children are paid on the worker's birthday schedule, not their own.
  2. Check whether a weekend or holiday moved the date earlier; the money may already be in your account.
  3. Look at your bank or Direct Express account for a pending deposit, and ask your bank if it holds federal deposits.
  4. If you recently changed banks or addresses, confirm SSA has the new details in your my Social Security account.
  5. Wait three additional mailing days after the scheduled date, as SSA asks.
  6. Then call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local office.
