Last updated: 2026 Payment Calendar Year
Quick Summary of SSI Rules
Standard Payment Day: The 1st day of every month.
Weekend / Holiday Rule: If the 1st lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal Banking Holiday, your payment is issued on the closest business day immediately preceding (usually the Friday before).
Birth Date Impact: Unlike standard Social Security retirement benefits, day of birth does NOT affect SSI payment dates. All SSI recipients follow the same 1st-of-the-month timetable.
How SSI Payment Scheduling Works
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to adults and children with disabilities, blindness, or individuals aged 65 and older who have limited income and financial resources.
Because SSI funds are intended to cover essential living needs at the start of each month (such as rent, groceries, and utilities), the Social Security Administration schedules all SSI disbursements for the first calendar day of each month.
The Preceding Business Day Rule (Why You Might Get Two Checks in One Month)
Banks and the Federal Reserve do not process standard government ACH direct deposits or clear mail on weekends and federal holidays. If the 1st of the month falls on:
- A Saturday or Sunday: Your deposit arrives on the preceding Friday.
- A Federal Holiday (such as New Year's Day on Jan 1): Your deposit arrives on December 31st (or the last business day of the prior month).
