Quick Answer

  • Who: people 65 or older, blind, or with a qualifying disability.
  • Resources: $2,000 or less ($3,000 for a couple). Your home and usually one car don't count.

  • No work history needed — unlike SSDI.

You may qualify for SSI

$714.00/mo

Your estimated federal SSI payment is about $714.00 a month, before any state supplement.

  • Age, blindness, or disability
Age 65 or older — no disability required.
  • Resources
Countable resources of $1,200 vs. the $2,000 limit. Your home and usually one car don't count.
  • Income
Countable income of $280 vs. the 2026 federal rate of $994.
  • Citizenship or immigration status
U.S. citizens and nationals meet this requirement.
How we figured it
Countable other income: $280.00 (after the $20 general exclusion)
Countable earnings: $0.00 (after $65 and half of the rest)
$994 federal rate − $280.00 countable income = $714.00

SSI Payment Amounts and Limits

20262027
Maximum federal SSI — individual$994/mo$1,029/mo
Maximum federal SSI — couple$1,491/mo$1,544/mo
Resource limit$2,000 individual · $3,000 couple (not indexed to inflation)

The 2027 rate starts with the payment made Thursday, December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a holiday.

Worked Example From SSA

SSA's own example: someone whose only income is a $300 Social Security benefit has $280 of countable income after the $20 exclusion. Their 2026 SSI is $994 − $280 = $714. Someone earning $317 from work has countable income of $116 ($317 − $20 − $65, then halved), so their SSI is $878. Try both in the checker.

What This Estimate Doesn't Include

  • State supplements — many states add money to the federal payment.
  • Living arrangements — free or reduced-cost housing from someone else can lower SSI. Since September 30, 2024, food help no longer counts.
  • Deemed income — some income of a spouse, parents (for children), or a noncitizen's sponsor may count.
  • Other exclusions — such as SNAP, tax refunds, and work expenses for people who are blind or disabled.

People who are 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability, and who have limited income and resources. Resources must be $2,000 or less for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. U.S. citizens and some noncitizens can qualify.

$1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for a couple, up from $994 and $1,491 in 2026. The higher amount starts with the payment made on December 31, 2026. Some states add a supplement.

SSA ignores the first $20 of most income and the first $65 of earnings plus half of the rest. That's why an individual with only work income can earn just under $2,073 a month in 2026 and still get some SSI.

Yes. Social Security benefits are unearned income. After the first $20, every dollar reduces SSI by a dollar. For example, a $300 Social Security benefit lowers 2026 SSI from $994 to $714.

Usually your home, one vehicle, household goods, burial plots, and some burial funds. Cash, bank accounts, stocks, and extra property count.

No. SSI is based on financial need and doesn't require work credits. SSDI is based on your work record. Some people qualify for both.
