What You Can Do Without Waiting for an Agent

The national number's automated system handles these tasks around the clock:

  • Verify your benefits for a landlord, lender, or another agency
  • Check the status of a pending claim
  • Change your address
  • Request your SSA-1099 tax form
  • Request a replacement Medicare card
  • Hear payment dates, COLA, and direct deposit information

Most of the same tasks are also available online in your my Social Security account.

How to Find a Social Security Office Near You

SSA's Field Office Locator lets you search by address, city, or ZIP code. It shows each office's address, hours, and whether it's a full-service field office or a Card Center.

Before you visit

  • Make an appointment first. SSA says visitors with an appointment waited about 6 minutes on average, versus just over 20 minutes overall in fiscal year 2026.
  • Bring original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. SSA can't accept photocopies or notarized copies.
  • Card Centers handle only Social Security cards and personal-information updates. For benefits, go to a regular field office.
  • Check for closings before you go. Offices can close temporarily for weather or construction.
  • SSA generally doesn't publish local office phone numbers. Use the Office Locator to find your office's address, hours, and contact details.

How to Make an Appointment With Social Security

  1. Online: go to SSA's appointment page and answer a few questions. SSA books a phone or in-person appointment — or tells you if you can finish the task online instead.
  2. By phone: call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m., and say you want to schedule an appointment.
  3. To change or cancel: use the link in the confirmation email or text SSA sent you. If a representative booked it, you'll also need the code they gave you.

Some tasks start online and book the appointment for you automatically — for example, a replacement Social Security card that needs documents checked in person.

Social Security Disability Phone Number

SSA doesn't have a separate disability hotline. Call the main number, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), to apply for SSDI or SSI, check a pending claim, or report work. You can also apply and check your claim status online at ssa.gov/disability. Once approved, sign in to my Social Security to see payments and get your benefit letter. Before you call, check whether you're likely to qualify with our SSDI eligibility checker or SSI eligibility checker.
